Hypermobility and pain
I was diagnosed with hsd last year which explained my last ten years of pain and fatigue.
All throughout I wasn’t sure why I suddenly got “lazy”, suddenly lost interest in my career, felt tired all the time. Sometimes when the pain was glaring and obvious I was blaming my knee injury for which I had to get multiple surgeries, ergo problems etc ( will write up about my medical history and path to diagnosis in a separate post).
After my diagnosis, I have given my everything trying to improve my pain. I have been obsessed with all the details including every single thing I have been doing every moment of the day ( and night too, I will post about that some other time). I have worsened my pain with many of things I tired including some of the exercises I have been trying. But I can tell you one thing, I am in a much better shape then I have ever been in last decade. It doesn’t mean I am pain free ( and I don’t even know if I will ever be), but I feel I can continue this path to reduce my pain further.
I want to share my learnings with you hoping it will help at least some of you. I know some of you have it much more worse than what I have experienced but I do see a lot of common symptoms too:
- One side is way weaker than the other side of the body
- Your shoulder caves in when you sleep on the side and you wake up with pain
- You will stiff when you wake up in the morning, some of which gets better when we move a bit but some other parts of the body gets worse as we move about. ( actually I feel all of us wake with pain but we don’t realize it)
- The weaker side pain radiates from neck to the fingers. Sometime we feel more towards neck, shoulders and some times more towards arm and hands and fingers
- Your lower back feels like its going to cave in any time
- Your thigh muscles ( I suspect it happens other places too but thigh its more apparent) looses mass in matter of days
- Flat foot and pain in different areas of the feet and extreme calf tightness
- Extreme hamstring tightness
- Pain from lower back which radiates down in the legs
- Constant swelling and soreness in the palm where thumb and palm connects
- muscles and joints clicking all over and all the time
- Fatigue and tightness all the time
- Constant nose block - I always used to think it is related to asthma and allergies ( yes they contributed to it but weren't the reason for the nose block all the time). This I believe was due to inflammations and swelling causing the blocks.
- Stomach pain and frequent stomach upsets throughout my life
- Allergies to everything under the sun - laundry smell, grass, trees, certain flowers, moist rooms, perfumes etc.
Anyways, as I try to write about my learnings please be patient with me. Whenever I have the energy to share, I will make every attempt to do so if it helps you guys. I will start with a bunch of self care posts and then move on to dealing with specific areas of the body. There is of course no quick fix solution here but I am hoping that I can lead you to a process which will help discover a path to living with less pain.
I am not a medical profession by any means. I also know that some of you are in much worser pain than what I experience. So please make sure you keep that in mind while I share my journey.
But my hope is some of the things I have been trying and will be trying, helps you too.
